The photo that I chose resonates with my deep love for America. I'm an advocate for stimulating patriotism, a bond I believe starts with our youth. We can fuel this bond by teaching children about America's unique role in shaping the world - our unmatched dedication to global wellbeing. I feel passionate about the idea of celebrating America's achievements and cultivating national pride in our education system.

Patriotism

Sometimes I think we are all like this guy on a high wire. It's hard to balance all the things we have going on and it's easy to feel like if one thing is off, it will all fall apart. I think one of the most important things we can tell ourselves and the people we love is that this isn't true. In life, a lot of things will fall apart - that's just the nature of life! The more we can understand and accept that, the less I think we will feel like this guy and the more control we will have.

Balance

My family has a strong legacy of military service, including an uncle who helped raise the flag at Iwo Jima and another who bravely endured 3 1/2 years as a POW in Korea. Their courageous sacrifices profoundly shaped my perspective and instilled a deep gratitude that is hard to put into words. From them, I've learned the profound impact of self-sacrifice, serving as a reminder never to take our freedom for granted.

Unsung Heroes

In college, I took an incredible class on the Vietnam War. The professor invited relatives or friends of students to share their personal experiences. My dear friend's father, Rick, came to that class and shared his experiences with us about his time in the war. It was my first time hearing firsthand from someone I knew and respected who had served, and it deeply had an impact on me. In honor of Veteran’s Day, I created this tribute for Rick. Thank you, Rick, for sharing your story and your service! Your impact has been long-lasting in my life. 

Echoes of Vietnam

I've never had  a job I love more than working as an ER doctor who treats veterans. These patients inspire me everyday. Regardless of the injuries they sustained in the military, the veterans are incredibly gracious, humble, and kind. At least once a shift, I am told, " Take care of the patient in the other room first...he needs you more than me...I don't mind waiting." As a nation, we are so lucky to have been protected by such brave men and women.

My grandfather, George, was a serviceman in the Navy during the Vietnam war. His dedication deeply impacted me, pushing me to follow in his footsteps for the love of our country. His bravery not only guided my decision to serve, but it also shaped my understanding of freedom and its profound significance. From his journey, I learned that genuine love for one's country can be a powerful motivator, influencing life-changing decisions.

His lessons of love, respect, and service to others became the cornerstone of my life. Through his examples, I learned the importance of dedicating oneself to the service of others. His legacy is a constant reminder that true fulfillment comes from making a difference in people's lives.

This is a Veterans Day tribute to my friend Brian (Maka), a military veteran and college friend. We go way back with experiences ranging from winning bowling league championships to European travels and much more.  Thank you, Maka, for your Service and for your friendship.

Growing up in Pakistan deeply impacted how I view the world. The harmonious blend of cultures, healing traditions, and communal knowledge sparked a transformation within me. Embracing this decolonized mindset, I found myself breaking down barriers and fostering connections. Through sharing my story, I aim to inspire others to embrace diverse cultures, build communities, and seek wisdom.

Our neighbor, Bob Gillman, was more than just a well-acquainted face; he was the commander of the Nimitz. His presence often stirred my thoughts, leaving a profound impression. Bob, a man of refined taste, loved wine intensely. His influence broadened my perspective, teaching me to appreciate the subtleties in life.

As an immigrant to the USA, I embraced the American values of liberty and freedom - values too precious to overlook. The increasing political divide, often stoked by the fear of "excessive diversity", shaped my perspective significantly. As a proud American, I feel motivated to stand up for justice and fiercely advocate for human rights. This emphasizes the power of embracing cultural differences, rather than seeing them as threats, in creating a more inclusive and just society.

My best friend, Jack Stern, someone I don't see nearly enough, became my greatest hero. His impact reshaped my perspective and inspired me to always strive for the best version of myself. I often wished I could have embarked on his journey right beside him. His story serves as a reminder that sometimes the biggest influencers in our lives may be those we least expect.

Enduring Friendship

Once upon a time, in a small town nestled between rolling hills and meandering rivers, there lived a man named Samuel. Samuel was a veteran, having served his country with honor and courage. His eyes held the weight of experiences only those who had walked the path of a soldier could understand.

As Veterans Day approached, the town began buzzing with excitement. Parades were being planned, flags were unfurled, and the community was eager to honor those who had sacrificed so much for their freedom. Samuel, however, seemed distant, lost in memories that only he could see.

One day, a curious young boy named Jake, with an unruly mop of hair and a heart full of questions, approached Samuel. "Why do you look so sad, Mr. Samuel?" he asked, eyes wide with innocence.

Samuel looked down at Jake and smiled. "Not sad, young man. Just remembering," he replied.

"Remembering what?" Jake persisted.

"Ah, come with me," Samuel said, gesturing for Jake to follow. They walked through the town, past the neatly arranged rows of houses, until they reached the outskirts where a quiet memorial stood. Engraved on the cold stone were the names of those who had given their lives for freedom.

"These are the faces I see in my memories," Samuel began, his voice carrying the weight of years gone by. "Friends, comrades, brothers and sisters in arms. On Veterans Day, we remember not just the living, but also those who never made it back home."

Jake listened intently, absorbing the gravity of the words. Samuel continued, "We celebrate Veterans Day to honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served. But it's not just about the past. It's about the present and the future. It's about recognizing the challenges veterans face when they return home—physical wounds, mental scars, and the need for support and understanding."

As the two stood in silence, a realization dawned on Jake. Veterans Day wasn't just a day to enjoy parades and wave flags; it was a day to truly care about the stories etched in the lines on Samuel's face, stories of love for country, camaraderie, and loss.

From that day forward, Jake became an advocate for veterans in his town. He organized events, raised awareness, and ensured that the stories of those who had served were shared and remembered. The community came together not only to honor the past but also to support the veterans among them.

And so, in that small town surrounded by hills and rivers, Veterans Day became a day of genuine care—a day to listen, learn, and appreciate the sacrifices of those like Samuel who had given so much for the freedom they enjoyed.

My father in law served in WWII in the Pacific theater. He didn't talk much about his experience, always turning the conversation back to something positive in his life. I know that he was injured in the battle on Guadalcanal. He was my hero and the hero for his grandchildren.
In honor of his service, I share this tribute.

The 1960s were tangled in a war in Southeast Asia. While our young men were being drafted, many young nurses enlisted to provide our soldiers medical treatment and support. Such was the life of Sherry Smith. Just out of nursing school, she signed up to go to Vietnam. I can't think of a better nurse to care for our troops. Sherry was full of life and skilled in her profession. She received a Bronze Star while on tour; an honor she never shared with her family. She left us too soon. Missing you, Sherry!

Nursing Hero

As a former U.S. Army officer, I've partaken in many memorable duties. One that lingers is delivering honors at veterans' funerals. My team and I would journey across Texas, often to remote towns, to present the American flag to grieving spouses. This deeply impactful experience instilled in me an even greater admiration for these veterans, who lived and served unassumingly. The strong sense of pride within them and their families resonated deeply. The experience redefined my understanding of service and sacrifice, teaching me to cherish and honor our brave veterans everywhere.

My grandfather, a World War 2 veteran, has left an indelible mark on my life, teaching me to value sacrifice, humility, and hard work. His many stories- filled with lessons, laughter, and unshakable love for family- shaped my perspective on life. His insistence on putting family first has become a guiding light for me. From his life, we learn the lesson of prioritizing loved ones and maintaining grace under pressure.

Veteran's Vista

My grandfather, a dedicated US Army Doctor with the 101st Airborne, influenced my perspective immensely through his service during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. His role as a wartime physician, healing grievously injured soldiers, instilled in me an appreciation for difficult yet essential jobs. Furthermore, his continued service in Lakeland, Florida post-war until his late 70s, demonstrated the lifelong dedication to aiding others. His life taught me the value of fortitude in the face of adversity and the profound impact of selfless service.

Healing in Chaos

My gratitude extends to my grandfather, George, and all other military veterans for their impactful service. Their sacrifices have deeply influenced my perspective. I'd like to express my profound thanks and admiration for their dedication and bravery. From them, we can all learn the true meaning of service, sacrifice, and resilience.

A Tribute to Veterans

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was established in Columbus, Ohio on August 22, 1899 as the "American Veterans of Foreign Service." The organization's founders included veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. They aimed to create a supportive community for veterans who had served in conflicts overseas. The VFW continues to operate numerous programs to assist veterans.

Bunka-no-hi (文化の日) is an annual national holiday in Japan recognized on November 3. It was established to commemorate the promulgation of the Constitution of Japan in 1946. It was written primarily by American civilian officials working under the Allied occupation of Japan after World War II.

Spending time at the VFW bar, listening to stories, and making new friends significantly shaped my outlook. These friends are not temporary; they're lifelong companions. The VFW bar isn't just a place to meet up, it's a sanctuary for friendship. From this, I learned the importance of companionship and camaraderie in life.

Veterans returning from World War II played a vital role in the increased production of U.S.-made vehicles in the 1950s. Their skills, work ethic, and economic impact contributed to the growth of the automotive industry, and their presence as consumers drove up demand for cars, helping to fuel the post-war economic boom and the "Golden Age" of the American automobile.

My involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) began when I discovered the major healthcare and mental illness challenges faced by older veterans. I was deeply inspired by a group of dedicated patriots, who selflessly worked for veterans' causes. Witnessing their unpaid hard work fueled my desire to serve the veterans community more actively. I learned that numerous veterans, especially the older ones who served our country with honor, are now in desperate need of assistance. I hope that my efforts and your generous donations can alleviate their struggles; they've earned that and so much more.

Volunteering with Pride

Lasting six brutal weeks, from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, World War II's Battle of the Bulge, also called the Battle of the Ardennes, took place during frigid weather conditions, with some 30 German divisions attacking battle-fatigued American troops across 85 miles of the densely wooded Ardennes Forest.
