About this Story
The mysterious ancient city of Nan Madol
One of my more memorable travels was to the island of Pohnpei, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and serves as the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia. On the island’s eastern shore lies the and mysterious archaeological site Nan Madol -- shrouded in legend and deeply ingrained in Pohnpeian folklore. Nan Madol, built in 8th century AD, consists of a series of small artificial islands linked by a network of canals. The site is known for its impressive basalt log construction, with massive stone blocks and columns forming the city's structures and foundations.
